What Causes Swollen, Discoloured Legs?

A swollen, darkened lower leg with skin changes like those shown in the image may be caused by several underlying conditions.

One common cause is chronic venous insufficiency, where damaged veins struggle to return blood to the heart, leading to swelling, skin discoloration, and sometimes ulcers. Other possible causes include varicose veins, lymphedema (a buildup of lymph fluid), blood clots, previous leg injuries, or certain medical conditions such as heart, kidney, or liver disease.

Infections and prolonged standing can also worsen swelling and skin changes. Because these symptoms can indicate a circulation problem, it is important to seek a medical assessment for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve leg health.
