Years passed, and despite the struggles, he grew into a kind, thoughtful young man.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On his 18th birthday, he surprised me. He looked me in the eyes and said, \u201cI want to meet Grandpa.\u201d My heart tightened, but I agreed. We drove to the house where I grew up. As we parked, he turned to me and said, \u201cStay in the car.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I watched him walk up and knock. My father opened the door. Then my son slowly reached into his backpack, pulled something out, and held it out to him. A small box.
